Susan J. Sadow - Speaker at 2013 State Board of Workers’ Compensation Regional Educational Seminar in Kennesaw on May 10, 2013

Susan J. Sadow will be a speaker at the Kennesaw annual educational seminar sponsored by the State Board of Workers' Compensation. The Board, under the leadership of The Honorable Judge Frank McKay, Chairman, will be conducting five seminars throughout Georgia in 2013 to educate those who work within Georgia’s workers’ compensation system or who want to learn more about the workers’ compensation system. Board Directors, Judges Stephen Farrow and Elizabeth Gobeil, will visit various cities throughout Georgia as part of the 2013 regional educational series on workers’ compensation.

Dramatic Changes in Georgia Workers' Compensation Law Anticipated to go into Effect on July 1, 2013

Georgia House Bill 154, which was introduced on January 30, 2013, passed by the House on February 11, 2013, and passed by the Senate on March 12, 2013, is expected to be signed into law by Governor Sonny Perdue. It will then go into effect on July 1, 2013. The Bill includes some very significant changes in workers' compensation law. The highlights of the bill are as follows:

New Appointment at the Georgia State Board of Workers' Compensation

The State Board announced on March 29, 2913 that the Honorable David Imahara has been appointed as the Chief Administrative Law Judge. Chief Judge Imahara has been involved in the Georgia workers' compensation system for close to seventeen years. He has been held a number of positions at the Board. Chief Judge Imahara has served as a Trial Judge in Atlanta, in the Hearings Division at the State Board. He was the former Deputy Chief Judge from 2008-2009, Director of the ADR (Mediation) Section from 2004-2008, and Division Director of the Appellate Division from 2000-2004.

New Hope for Healing ACL Tears

Knee injuries are extremely common in the work place. When injured workers are diagnosed with ACL tears, surgery is typically their only option. After surgery, many people can anticipate a long and often painful recovery. Children's Hospital in Boston recently reported a new breakthrough that may soon help get workers with ACL tears back on their feet more quickly.

The aim is that instead of a four to six month recovery time, one day, people will be able to avoid surgery thanks to a breakthrough procedure to repair damaged knees. No knife! Just a needle!

Susan J. Sadow Selected as 2013 Georgia Super Lawyer

Susan J. Sadow is proud to announce that she has been named a Georgia Super Lawyer in the March 2013 edition of Atlanta magazine. This is the eighth consecutive year that Ms. Sadow has been recognized as one of the top attorneys in Georgia receiving this honor. She is the only female Claimants workers' compensation lawyer to receive this honor. No more than 5 percent of all lawyers in Georgia are selected as Super Lawyers.

Sadow Named 2013 Top 50 Georgia Women Super Lawyers

Susan J. Sadow was recently selected as one of the 2013 Top 50 Women Georgia Super Lawyers in the March 2013 edition of Atlanta magazine. This is the fourth consecutive year that she has received this honor. She is the only female workers' compensation lawyer to have been awarded this recognition.

New Chairman of the GA State Board of Workers’ Compensation

Governor Nathan Deal’s Office issued a press release on February 4, 2013 announcing that attorney Frank R. McKay, a partner with the law firm of Stewart, Melvin & Frost in Gainesville, Georgia, has been named as the new Chairman of the State Board of Workers’ Compensation. McKay specialized in the area of prosecuting and defending civil litigation cases. He will be filling a vacancy left by the outgoing Chairman Richard Thompson. McKay’s appointment is effective March 1, 2013. McKay has practiced law for 22 years and he has served on the Georgia State Board’s Advisory Council.

Ergonomics App Wins U.S. Department of Labor's People's Choice Award

The U.S. Department of Labor has awarded $3000 to the developer of an Ergonomics app as a part of its Worker Safety and Health App Challenge. The Ergonomics free mobile app offers ergonomic equipment setup advice, a variety of workplace specific stretching exercises, and programmable reminders to help you time your breaks.

President Signs Bipartisan Medicare Law

The SMART Act was signed by President Obama on January 10, 2013. It is designed to streamline the Medicare Secondary Payer system to ensure that seniors and persons with disabilities get timely assistance and taxpayers are repaid millions of dollars every year. It is a significant step forward toward eliminating the confusion and uncertainty inherent in past CMS procedures by providing more clear, efficient and definitive information.

H.R. 1063 Medicare SMART Act Passes House of Representatives - Sent to the Senate

Business Insurance recently reported that a bill designed to ease problems that we as members of the workers' compensation community frequently face with Medicare Secondary Payer Act compliance has passed the House of Representatives as part of a larger legislative package.

Provisions of H.R. 1063, the Strengthening Medicare and Repaying Taxpayers Act, were passed Wednesday as part of H.R. 1845. The legislation passed 401-3, according to the American Insurance Association. It has been sent to the Senate for further consideration.
